The Client

Davies Technology Solutions (DTS) is a rapidly growing division within the Davies Group, a global professional services and technology firm. DTS develops a wide array of digital products and applications serving diverse sectors, including major enterprise clients.

The Ask

DTS was experiencing hyper-growth, largely driven by strategic brand acquisitions. While this growth was fantastic for business, it created a significant operational and user experience challenge.

Our digital landscape had become fragmented. We were dealing with inconsistent product designs, even applications within the same division looked and behaved differently. Furthermore, every time we spun up a new product, we were essentially starting from scratch. This led to massive code duplication, sluggish design-to-development handoffs, and a frustrating inability to scale our accessibility standards efficiently.

The core challenge we set out to solve:

How do we establish visual consistency, ensure rigid accessibility standards, and drastically accelerate our product delivery speed across a growing portfolio of apps?

What We Did

We realised that we didn't just need a UI kit; we needed a single source of truth. We conceptualised, designed, and launched Exemplar, the official DTS Design System.

  1. Establishing a Modular Foundation To ensure scalability, we adopted the Atomic Design methodology. We broke down our user interfaces into fundamental building blocks (Atoms like form labels and buttons), combining them into increasingly complex structures (Molecules, Organisms, Templates, and Pages). This mental model gave our team a shared language to build cohesive interfaces rather than isolated screens.

    • Designing for Flexibility and Accessibility We developed a unified visual style heavily inspired by Google's Material Design, focusing on clean, intuitive interactions.

    • Colour Architecture: We aggressively streamlined our colour usage to just seven core variables (three branded colours and four system colours, complete with light and dark variations). This strict governance eliminated UI "oddities" and guaranteed high-contrast, accessible readability.

  2. White-Label Readiness: Because DTS builds products for external enterprise clients, Exemplar couldn’t be rigid. We engineered components to be highly customisable, featuring alternative colours and optional icons that could instantly adapt to any client's unique brand palette.

  3. Bridging Design and Engineering A design system is only as good as its adoption. We collaborated closely with engineering to map our designs to code, laying the groundwork for a Storybook integration to serve as the ultimate reference point for DTS developers.

The Result

Exemplar fundamentally transformed how DTS builds digital products, shifting us from a fragmented, bespoke process to a streamlined, scalable assembly line.

  • Accelerated Speed to Market: By eliminating redundant design and development work, we drastically reduced delivery times. As Gareth Holloway (Project Manager, Delivery) noted, Exemplar "saved significant time and money in delivery" during a project for an enterprise client.

  • Empowered Engineering: Developers gained greater autonomy. With a robust library of pre-approved components, they could build front-end interfaces faster and with fewer QA kickbacks.

  • Elevated Client Trust: Exemplar allowed us to demonstrate high-fidelity, branded themes to clients during the early analysis phases without incurring extra design costs. Mitchell Smith (Business Analyst) observed that this "goes a long way to give confidence to our clients that the solutions we deliver have had considerations for UI/UX and accessibility."

The Future

Exemplar is a living system. Following its successful rollout, we established a roadmap to introduce full Dark Mode support, expand our component variations, and launch regular drop-in sessions to foster an open-source culture of contribution across the wider DTS team.
